I am absolutely delighted with "Big Adventures Small Harps, Introductory" and highly recommend it to aspiring harpists. This book has been incredibly useful, offering significant value to both absolute beginners who are just starting out and those who have basic skills but wish to learn to read music.
The book features a meticulously thought-out teaching methodology. It provides a clear, step-by-step guide to mastering note-reading through playing pleasant melodies, which are also supported by excellent audio accompaniment tracks. The material uses a variety of teaching techniques that greatly aid in learning and retention.
What makes this book stand out is its long-term utility. While primarily designed for beginners, I find it remains useful well into the late-beginner stage due to its adaptable structure. Although not explicitly detailed or emphasized in the book, I have successfully utilized it across at least four distinct levels of skill development, which I am currently enjoying immensely:
1) Note Acquisition: Learning notes by playing with the second finger of the right hand, as directed in the instructions.
2) Right-Hand Technique Development: Playing the right-hand melody while consciously considering and refining the fingering, utilizing all four fingers.
3) Basic Accompaniment: Introducing the chord base note with the left hand (using the chords provided for teacher accompaniment).
4) Advanced Accompaniment: Gradually adding more notes to the chord, incrementally approaching the richer arrangement heard in the audio tracks.
This multi-layered approach allows one book to facilitate the progressive development of skills far beyond its initial scope.
I highly recommend this volume and am genuinely thrilled to have discovered it.
